Ups and Downs of Solo Traveling

Hey you guys!

Solo traveling is sure fun! Though I know some people don’t like it and prefer to do it with friends/family. Which is perfectly fine! I have posted a post about solo traveling before (insert link here), do check it out if you are still thinking whether you should do it or not!

Every type of traveling, of course, has their own ups and downs. So what are the ups and downs for solo traveling? Oh yea, I’m talking about this based on my experience so some people might agree or have the same experience as me and some might don’t.

There is, somehow, this illusion of traveling solo being sooo dreamy

Whenever I tell people that I went to this or that place alone, their reaction always “wow how can you do that?” “Oh I always want to try it” etc etc. Some are somehow worried, some are finding this exciting. There is, somehow, this illusion of traveling solo being sooo dreamy. But, of course it’s not always full of ups right? It’s not always as sweet or dreamy as it sounds.

Bondi Beach, Australia

So let me tell you the truths about traveling alone…

It’s not because I want to do it all the time, but because I need to!

“I’m free next week” “But I’m not! How about this week? That would be cool” “But I have errands to do this week”

Sounds familiar? Face it guys. When you are going to travel with other people, for example your friend, you have to match your and your friend’s schedule or budget. And even your traveling style. Some people like to shop during traveling some dont, some like the city better and some dont. Right? For me, i find it hard to find someone who has the same style as me.

It’s not like I want to be alone guys, I just dont want to wait for someone to actually go and do something that I want. It feels better when you go to somewhere unfamiliar to you and you have a companion no? But again, do I want to wait for someone to travel and wait for God knows how long?

But, it can be scary…

Of course it’s scary to be alone in a place that you are not familiar with. It can be intimidating to walk alone here and there in a new place, especially if we cant speak the language. You might think what if A what if B and so on. But hey! It’s okay! Just keep calm it’s mostly just you overthink things. I always try to keep calm and think things throughly and just go with it hehe. I just need to take my first step and the unfamiliarity will develop into sense of familiarity bit by bit

And also liberating at the same time!

To be honest guys, whenever I want to go somewhere alone i always have this insecure feeling. Just like what I said before, traveling solo can be scary. But right after I take my first step, i feel so proud of myself. Like, hey! See you can do it!

However, sometimes you feel like there’s no one to share your incredible experience

I walked for hours to Bondi Beach, Australia right after I arrived there. With only 30% phone battery and no apps to tell me which public transport should I take. The maps on my phone kept showing the wrong route so I had to walked for a long time. For me, it’s an unforgettable experience and a good lesson learnt as well. But hey, if there was someone with me during that time, we could share that experience together and laugh it when we remember the story, no? But because I was alone, I have no one to share it though I can tell other people the story it feels different.

But… It is soooo easy to plan everything (or not to plan anything!)

Well, you are free to plan anything you want! If you wanna visit certain place or landmark OR if you dont wanna visit it. It is all up to you! You wanna go where your feet is taking you? Consider it as done! See? It’s making everything simple to plan or not to plan, to go or not to go. Everything is all up to you 😀 You could go to wherever you want!

Though, you may, sometimes, worry about your safety or feel self-conscious

When I’m alone at the restaurant or even just strolling around alone, sometimes I get self-conscious and overthink things then get worried about my own safety. What if my wallet got stollen, what if this happen what if that happen. Oh so many what ifs guys. But again, sometimes it’s just your mind trying to mess you up hahaha. Just keep calm and stay vigilant 🙂

You could get to know yourself better and even train yourself when you are in trouble

For me, it’s easier to get to know myself better when I am alone. Because you get to know and to think about yourself more thoroughly without any intervention from other party. After traveling alone couple of times, I realize that I am rather clumsy and dont pay attention much to my personal belongings. Which is a dangerous thing no? I dropped my phone back in Australia (luckily the girls were kind enough to look for the owner phew), I lost my wallet back in Northern Ireland because I didnt pay attention to my bag (you could check my post on travel safety here) aaaand so on. Traveling solo also train me to stay calm when I am facing difficulties. I mean guys, I was basically alone there and barely know anyone except those that I just met hahaha

London, United Kingdom. Strolling around the city on my second week in the UK

Well, on the other hand, you could feel a bit lonely sometimes

When you’re traveling solo, it may make you feel lonely. Eating alone, strolling the city alone *all by myself playing in the background*

All byyyy myseeeellff, dont wanna be all by myseeeelf anymoreee

And sometimes, it’s hard to meet someone. No matter how hard you try somehow you just cant click with anyone somehow

But the truth is, you are never really alone

Yea it may be hard to meet someone sometimes, but you could always meet other people in other places no? Maybe you cant click with anyone right away, but you are never really alone 😀 I dont always make friends in every place that I have visited. If I dont make new friend in this place, then I could always make a new friend in other place (I’m just a happy go lucky kind of person I guess hahaha)

So, is solo traveling worth it? Of course it is! Leave all your fears and insecurities behind. Dont wait for someone if you wanna do something. Just trust yourself but always be mindful and careful! It will be worth it! You could try it once, it does not have to be abroad or somewhere far far away. Then see if you like it, if it’s not your style then of course it is okay too! Just like what I said in my previous post here, everyone has their own traveling style 😀

Cheers,

Run Kemmy Run!

Hey you guys!

This is a story about how I almost missed my flight. Yeaaaaa, told ya, I always, I repeat, ALWAYS, do stupid things during my travel.

My family planned to go to Japan during Eid Mubarak holiday last May-June. They departed on May 25 while I on May 28. I felt bad to actually leave the office again after disappear for 3 weeks on April. Don’t blame me, I got hospitalised for one week before I flew to the UK hahaha. So anyway, my flight was from Jakarta to Osaka and I was going to meet my family in Kyoto.

You see guys, at the end of the month, we have to do something called accrual. So I had to finish this accrual first and then went to the airport to catch my flight. AND my friends (yes friends, they are more than just a colleagues to me) kept teasing me so I could not leave the office. It’s basically because the other team had not finished their report yet. But I just cant left them, I mean, the report was our responsibility. Sooo, I left at 4.30 pm or something and managed to arrive at the airport without any problem. My flight was at 8pm and since I was fasting, I thought I could pray first then eat something real quick to break my fast.

At 6pm ish I went inside the gate and boy oh boy the queue was pretty long. I flew with Jetstar and I bought a seat last minute before I went to the airport. Just my luck, the airport service officer printed the wrong seat. So I asked him to change my seat according to what I have bought. Oh you guys, I saw this “LAST CALL” on the screen and I was panicking hahaha. Then I immediately went to the immigration then proceed to the boarding gate (slightly running!). But apparently the gate was not opened yet. Oh phew, lucky! I was still able to charge my phone first. I dont really like to bring power bank so yeah haha.

I had around 2 hours of transit in Singapore and 50 minutes stopover in Taipei. The ticket said that my flight from Singapore-Taipei-Osaka is using the same airplane so I thought oh okay I dont have to change airplane then. Apparently, I still had to get out from the plane although it was only a 50 minutes stop using the same airplane. To be honest, until now I dont know the difference between the two, but what I know now is that we still have to get out from the plane. AND 50 MINUTES IS FREAKING SHORT.

I got out from the plane and just walked calmly. Stupidly, I followed some people in front of me while trying to check where the transfer/flight details is. Heck, I could not even find one. By the time I realised… OH WOW I ARRIVED AT THE IMMIGRATION GATE. WHAT THE FUCK?! I WAS DOOMED.

I thought okay, this is it. I’m going to miss my flight. Bye. Gotta buy new tickets. Shit. What should I tell my parents. SHIIIITTT. My parents and brother will definitely rant about how stupid I am. Yep. Great.

OH WOW I ARRIVED AT THE IMMIGRATION GATE. WHAT THE FUCK?! I WAS DOOMED.

Trying to calm myself down, I asked a security there but apparently he could not speak English. So he said that I had to fill the form and went straight to the immigration. I AM SO DEAD. I DONT SEE OTHER PEOPLE NEARBY. DEAAAAD. DEAAAADDD.

So I walked back to where I was from mindlessly. Could not even tell what time is it here and how many minutes left for the airplane to depart. Then, I saw 3 airport staffs and went to them, hoping that they could show me the way. So I asked where should I go, I could not find any flight details around here. They could not speak English as well but they told me to go back by pointing the way. So I tried to ask desperately if they could check which gate is my flight from their phone. Apparently my gate was B1 or something and you know what, I was near gate D. HAHAHA. DEEEEEAAADD.

I ran while I was carrying my travel backpack (yes I only brought my backpack since I didnt buy any baggage). Then I finally saw the flight details near gate B. Guess what I saw. Yeah… “LAST CALL”

Oh my days, another last call.

I ran with all my might. Apparently my gate was very far which is at the end of the building. Oh and, after I reached the end of the corridor, I had to go down to actually reached my gate. I kinda forgot, I think it was gate B1R or something. So I ran again until I reached the gate.

LUCKILY, I ARRIVED JUST IN TIME!

When I arrived on my seat (at the back), I saw that most people that flew with me from Singapore were not there. So most of them are new passengers. Oh. That’s why when I blindly followed the previous passengers I just got lost hahahha

Moral of the story: Again, dont be stupid Kem. Dont just blindly follow people in front of you.

So that was it guys. A story how I almost missed my flights twice in a row and ran with all my might while carrying a backpack.

Cheers,

Kemmy

Travel Safety: Mind Your Belonging

Hey you guys!

It’s been a long time since the last time I updated my blog hahaha. So recently I just went to the UK (yeaaaay). I just fulfilled one of my bucket lists! Anywaaaay I’ll talk about it later. Yea yea I have at least 2 posts that I haven’t posted

Alrighty then let’s talk a bit about your safety. Yepp travel safety. No no, this is not because my background is from health and safety. Well maybe just a little heee. But this is also from my experience.

So during my travel to the UK, I lost my wallet. I lost it in Belfast, until now I’m not sure whether I dropped it or someone stole it. After I finished my GOT tour, I decided to dropped by Tesco and bought some food. I’m pretty sure I put my wallet in my rucksack as I put the change, 17 pence, in my pocket.

Anyway, I walked to the hostel, around 1 km from Tesco, then went to the kitchen. At first it was only me in the kitchen and I just put my bag on the table. Then I saw my roommate and waved frantically hahaha and by that time there was another person in there beside me and my roommate.

So anyway I still left my bag on a table (stupid right) and talked then cooked with her. The other person then went out. Then when I grabbed my bag, I realize I lost my wallet. But then I still try to act calm. I went to my room and searched my wallet. I let out all of my belongings from my bag and hope that I could find it. But no. Nothing. I went back to the kitchen and ate the dinner. Still trying to act (or look) calm. Then I went to Tesco again and asked whether I left my wallet anndd noooo there was nothing as well.

By that time, I started to panic a bit. I still tried to calm myself down and thought of any possible solutions. Then I thought, okay I still have my e banking and so I could just send the money to my roommate and asked her to withdraw it. TIDAK SEMUDAH ITU FULGOSO (Not that easy, Fulgoso; Fulgoso is the name of Marimar’s dog – a telenovela that showed on TV when I was a kid haha). She doesn’t know her bank account number. Yep. Dead. I needed to go back to London the next day and I needed at least 8 pounds for the bus.

She does not have much money either BUT she is soooo kind to actually give me 16 pounds :”””” FAITH IN HUMANITY IS RESTORED! Because of her I could go to the airport. But then, another issue was not solved yet. How can I go to London from Stansed?! What about food and everything?

I asked my friend’s friend, let’s call him Nuel, to store my luggage in his place before I went to Belfast. Becauseeee I flew with Ryan Air and bought no storage. I can’t call him and asked for a help because I don’t wanna bother him and I just met him once. And i was afraid that he will tell my friend, then it would cause an uproar back at the office. So, I hopelessly called my friend who studied in Newcastle. She apparently was in London that time but will fly to Paris the next day.

Miraculously, she knows my college friend who is currently studying her Master in London. And guess what, SHE WAS AT HER PLACE! I totally forgot that my college friend studied in the UK. LIKE WHOA. So she gave the phone to my friend, her name is Tita and Tita, if you’re reading this, I love you :”) thanks for saving me. So she told me that she would order an Uber for me to go to her place ah I am so relieved.

I actually already booked a room for my second week in London but the hostel canceled my booking on the day of my flight back to London. So I asked Tita if I could stay at her place. Luckily she has this nice sofa in the living room where I could sleep :”) I then decided to cancel all of my plan to go around South East England because my mood was kinda ruined and I had to spend more money than my actual budget

So guys, traveling is not always full of the joys of spring. Some bad things might happen, in my case I lost my wallet. Again, I’m not blaming anyone or anything, it’s pure because I didn’t pay enough attention on my surroundings. So please, be careful and stay alert during your travel. DONT ever leave your belongings unattended. I was lucky I separated my ID cards and other important card on separate wallet. I was lucky my passport was still with me. If it lost then I would definitely panicking.

Cheers
